By far my favourite wine of the evening at the colourfulwines.com Wine and Chocolate tasting. Feel a bit guilty that it was the only non Spanish wine there. In fairness I enjoyed all the wines that evening but this South African red wine used a grape I know little about: Pinotage. I do love the discovery of new grape varieties especially in wines as good as this one.
The wine was a ruby red colour with a heavenly scent of toast and hints of dark chocolate. The aroma was filled with promise that the wine delivered on. A dry wine with medium body and low tannins, it had a beautiful smokey flavour with toasty bits over a red fruit base. It tasted as if it had been in a smoke shed for 6 months.
Absolutely delicious and so well blended for such prominent flavours.
It was paired with 65% dark chocolate made from Criolla and Trinitario coco from Madagascar. Madagascan chocolates tend to be on the bitter side which I do not like. I tried a bit, but didn’t mix it with the wine. The wine was outstanding all by itself and did not need to be sullied with chocolate no matter how good.
