Kleine Zalze Pinotage 2017

Another wine from one of my UK trips, though this time from last year. I was a bit busy towards the end of last year, so a number of wine tastings didn’t get written up. Sorry about that, but better late than never.

I tried this wine at a hotel restaurant where they divide the wine list into flavour types. This is a new trend in the UK and is very useful if you know what flavours you like but not sure which wines will deliver them. I usually go for young fruity reds, but had decided I needed to experiment more for the blog’s sake (the sacrifices I make), so I selected this from the ‘medium spicy wine’ section of the menu.

This was one if the first red wines made from the Pinotage grape variety that I tried. I’ve since had a couple more to confirm that I really like this grape. This was by no means the best Pinotage I’ve tried but it was good enough to make me want to try more, so a job well done!

I wasn’t able to tell the colour in the dim lighting but it had a lovely fruity scent of dark red berries on first sniff, with some spicy tones. The flavour is was predominately spicy with the dark berry fruit underneath. A medium body wine with low tannins so I was fully able to appreciate the flavours.

There was a hint of raw dark green veg in there both scent and taste. It came and went but was rather interesting. Generally any sulphur like compounds in a wine is considered negative, but I really like sulphurous veg like brócoli and cabbage. I eat it raw all the time. So I quite enjoy this flavour in small quantities in a wine. Each to their own, that’s what I say.

I’ve since checked their website and see that the Cellar Selection is designed to be low cost, fruit led wines accessible to all. The wine is aged in barrels for 12 months. Apparently along with the red berries I should have got hints of lavender. Perhaps that’s what I thought of as spice. Wild lavender is quite a strong sharp herb.

Regardless this was a good, easy to drink wine that set me firmly on the path to try more Pinotages.
