Matsu El Recio Crianza 2015

This wine was a gift from a friend who attends some of my wine tastings. Bodega Matsu produce a range of four red wines made from 100% Tinto de Toro: A young wine, a Crianza and two Reservas. The bottle labels all have the image of a man on them. A young man for the young wine, a middle aged man for the Crianza and an elderly man for the Reserva.

Check out the Matsu website where they have a great video on the D.O. Toro wines

My friend originally picked these wines because she likes the labels. She bought me the Crianza, as the most age appropriate man for me, but labels aside it turns out this is my favourite D.O. Toro wine so far.

D.O. Toro is considered the poor cousin to Ribera del Duero. Practically next door geographically and using a clone of the same grape variety, Tempranillo, the Toro wines are nonetheless heavier than their Ribera cousins and sometimes a bit rough. But this is an area with a great deal of potential and has old vines that predate the phylloxera plague in Europe. It’s capable of producing rich, full bodied yet fruity reds if they can just round off some of the rougher edges.

This wine does just that. Matsu is the Japanese word for ‘Wait’ a homage to the generations that have gone into wine making in the area. I tired the 2015 Crianza which is made from 100% Tinto de Toro from vines of 90 to 100 years old. It has been aged in French oak barrels for 14 months and then further aged in the bottle for another 2 years.

The lighting in my lounge is too low to see the colour of the wine clearly. However it had a lovely potent scent of black currant and raisins with some cinnamon.

A nicely rounded dry wine with medium plus body and a good finish. It has medium tannins and low to medium acidity.

In flavour this is a lovely fruity wine of black currant and dried fruit. There is the sourness I always get from the tannins and acidity, but it reminds of a breakfast I sometimes make of natural yoghurt, berries and cinnamon. There is also slight hints of dried wood.

On the whole a good fulfilling red wine that is relatively smooth and fruity making it easy to drink.
