In honour of the Easter season we thought we’d take a quick look at the free (yes you heard correct: free!) wine fountains that two generous wineries provide for those plucky people hiking Europe’s religious caminos.

The best known and I believe original concept is in Irache in Navarra Spain on the famous Camino De Santiago. It is provided by Bodegas Irache at the local monastery and there is a live webcam there if you wish to check out who is availing themselves. I’ve not had the chance to check the wine out myself yet, but Navarra produces some great wines so it’s definitely on the list of things to do.

A more recent arrival to the scene and based on the Irache concept is the Caldori de Ortana wine fountain on the Cammino di San Tommaso in the Abruzzo region of Italy. This was opened in 2016 from the Dora Sarchese vineyard.
