Malkoa 2015

This is the third wine from a ‘Atlantic wines’ tasting at Madrid & Darracott. A Txakoli (pronounced cha-koh-lee’ wine from the Basque region. For those of you who have tried Txakoli wines in the past you’re probably thinking dry, sharp, refreshing fizzy whites and for the most part you would be right, but not this time. The denominación of Txakoli de Alava is the smallest D.O. in the group and was only created in 1989 yet it is now producing some top quality wines, including this one, without a frizz in sight.

The name of this wine, Malkoa, mean tears in basque and it is a good name as this wine has some serious legs on it.

It is made from 100% Ondarrabi Zuri grapes from 100 year old vines, picked when they are very ripe. Like the previous white this wine is left on its lees for 20 months in a concrete egg, which is designed to make the wine and lees naturally move around and evenly mix.

It is a pale yellow and you can smell the lees ageing. A lovely doughy bread scent underlaid with citrus.

A dry wine with high acidity, good body, a nice finish but still refreshing. The scents come through in the flavour with a mouth full of doughy bread and citrus. A lovely smooth texture.

I really enjoyed this wine.
