Barcolobo Verdejo

This wine is an excellent example of how sometimes a Vino de Tierra is your best choice. Historically when it comes to the Spanish wine quality labelling system wines from a DO or DOCa were a guarantee of quality levels and wines representative of that region. Vinos de Tierra were considered the lesser cousin. These days however some fantastic wine makers are deliberately spurning the DOs in order to experiment with wines that do not fit the mould.

That appears to be the case with this white wine from the Barcolobo Bodega which is based in Castronuño in the DO Rueda region and uses 100% Verdejo which is the DO Rueda grape variety, yet it does not carry the DO qualification. This may be because it has been aged in new french oak barrels on its lees for 4 months. I’ve no idea if this is allowed under the Rueda rules, but it is certainly unusual for the area whose wine are usually young, fresh and fruity. Whatever the reason I applaud their actions because I love lees aged wines this one included.

I tried this wine at a Vinopremier.com tasting showcasing wines from another bodega. Whilst waiting for it to start I ordered this wine by the glass to pass the time. They were due to have a tasting showcasing the Barcolobo wines the following week but J knew I couldn’t make it, so thought I’d give the white wine a go. I’m glad I did because I loved it.

You can tell immediately that this is different from the usual pale lemon Verdejo as it has a stronger gold yellow colour. It also smells very different from you average Verdejo with a medium intense scent of oil, lemon and banana. Very interesting.

A dry white with medium body, relatively high acidity and a good finish. This is a wine with much more oomph than its DO Rueda cousins. It has a nice oily taste that fills your mouth with mature white fruit underneath then a lovely clean but lingering finish. Very nicely balanced. The joy of this wine is in its texture and body, as much as its flavours.

I loved this wine.
