Curious to know more about this fortified wine? Port has a long history in Europe. The Portuguese vineyards date back to antiquity but it was the arrival of trade links with the UK in the 12th century that were the main engine for the rise of Portugal’s wine industry. What can I say, we Brits drink a lot of wine, we always have 🤪. Anyway it was the need for a wine that could withstand long sea voyages that gave rise to the fortified wine known as Port from the Douro Valley in the 18th century.
