The Denominación de Origin de Somontano is well worth getting to know. It is Nestled at the base of the Pyrenees in the Province of Huesca in the Aragon region of Spain. As such this Northernly area is colder than most Spanish regions and features grape varieties more usually associated with it’s neighbour France.
They do some excellent white wines using Chardonnay, Reisling and Gewürztraminer. They also produce red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
If you’ve been in Spain a while and feel the need for a change from the Spanish stalwarts of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Verdejo, Alboriño and Macabeo then this is the wine region you need.
